A landmark moment occurred in February 2016, when the one millionth solar PV system was installed in the U.S. The vice president of communications at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Dan Whitten,\u00a0<a title=\"The US Solar Market Is Now 1 Million Installations Strong\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greentechmedia.com\/articles\/read\/The-U.S.-Solar-Market-Now-One-Million-Installations-Strong\">stated<\/a>, \u201cThis is a time to mark when the solar industry started to accelerate at warp speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Boom Time for U.S. Solar<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to SEIA, another major milestone of two million <a title=\"BUSINESSES RUN ON SUNSHINE- ADDRESSING 4 ON-SITE COMMERCIAL SOLAR INSTALLATION CHALLENGES\" href=\"articles\/commercial-solar-installation-challenges\/\">solar installations<\/a> is anticipated to take only two more years to reach.<\/p>\n<p>As PV Magazine puts it, \u201cEven though final data is not yet in, 2016 was clearly boom time for U.S. solar. While the market has grown every year in the 21st century, by the time final numbers are published the volume of the U.S. market is expected to have nearly doubled from just over 7 GW in 2015 to\u00a0<a title=\"Mercom Capital forecasts 13 GW of U.S. solar installations for 2016\" href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2016\/11\/29\/mercom-capital-forecasts-13-gw-of-u-s-solar-installations-for-2016\/\">13-14 GW in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Commercial Solar Beats Out Any Other Source of Electricity <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The declining costs of solar is one of the biggest stories in the renewable energy world. Solar development continues to change the energy landscape around us.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, market analysts at <a title=\"World Energy Hits a Turning Point: Solar That's Cheaper Than Wind\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-12-15\/world-energy-hits-a-turning-point-solar-that-s-cheaper-than-wind\">Bloomberg New Energy Finance<\/a>\u00a0(BNEF) found that building a new commercial solar farm was less expensive than wind projects. It is also less than half the price of coal power. This solar surprise proved to be a remarkable turning point for renewables, especially in lower-income countries.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Solar and Renewable Energy Mandates<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Many states have started to increase their solar and renewable energy mandates. For example, <a title=\"New York regulators issue 50% by 2030 renewable energy mandate\" href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2016\/08\/01\/new-york-regulators-issue-50-by-2030-renewable-energy-mandate\/\">New York imposed a 50% by 2030 renewable portfolio standard<\/a>.\u00a0<a title=\"Oregon passes bill to phase out coal, set 50% by 2040 renewable energy mandate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2016\/03\/03\/oregon-passes-bill-to-phase-out-coal-set-50-by-2040-renewable-energy-mandate_100023529\/\">Oregon also imposed a mandate of 50% by 2040<\/a>. More than half of all U.S. states have some type of renewable energy standard or goal in place,\u00a0<a title=\"States with In-State Resource RPS Requirements\" href=\"http:\/\/ncsolarcen-prod.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014-Daniel-In-State-RPS-Requirements.pdf\">18 states<\/a> include more specific requirements (called carve-outs) for distributed generation.
